Ethiopian Foreign Minister Accuses "influential" Nations of Neglecting Somalia

Addis Abba,(insidesomalia.org)- Foreign Affairs Minister Seyoum Mesfin has said the issue of stabilizing Somalia and building the capacity of institutions in that country is equally important as the ongoing activities to maintain peace, speed up development and build a democratic system in Ethiopia.

The minister said existence of stability and peace in the Neighboring Somalia is unquestionable to achieve rapid development and democratic system in Ethiopia.

Seyoum made the statement in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Saturday [29 March] after conferring with President Abdullahi Yusuf of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia.

In an interview with ENA [Ethiopian News Agency] reporter same day, the minister said the TFG of Somalia has been striving to ensure sustainable peace and stability in that country.

Seyoum said training, material and financial support is significant to organize institutions of the TFG of Somalia and further strengthen security forces in that country. Though Ethiopia is doing its level best in this sector, it cannot be said that the international community is providing the required assistance to Somalia.

Currently, influential countries are not providing the necessary support to Somalia. In this case, they have neglected that country.

Ethiopia, in collaboration with member countries of the African Union, should keep on calling for the assistance of the international community to Somalia.

The aim of the discussion was to stress the need of primary attention to Somalia, evaluate and exchange views on existing cooperation between Ethiopia and Somalia.

President Abdullahi, on his part, said the situation in Somalia is getting improved as compared to the situation previously. However, the participation of the international community in the efforts to maintain sustainable peace and stability in that country is low.
